Super Bowl XLV was certainly a thrilling game, and when Ben Roethlisberger had the football with under a
minute to play, I think everyone felt Pittsburgh would win. Congratulations to Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.
This past Super Bowl was not only significant to Pittsburgh and Green Bay fans, but also meant something to
anyone affiliated with Bowie State University. Steelers running back Issac Redman became the first BSU
Bulldog ever to play on the grandest stage of the NFL. Redman was a star running back for Bowie State
from 2004-2008 and there he is regarded by many as the very best football player in the school's history. It
is a claim that is heavily supported, as he holds numerous records and is the recipient of many awards. He is
in fact the all time leading rusher in Bulldog history with 3,300 yards. He was CIAA First Team in 2005 and
2007. Redman also holds the BSU record for most rushing yards in a single season 1,512. The Steelers
definately saw something in the young back when it signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2009. Though he
was initially cut prior to the 2009 season, the Steelers decided to resign him that year. In 2010 he saw his
first real action, as he rushed for 247 yards on 52 carries. ( which is an impressive 4.8 ypc average.) He also
scored two touchdowns, none bigger than his nine yard TD reception from Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh's
13-10 win over Baltimore in December. Last night in the Super Bowl, Redman saw limited action, as he only
carried the ball twice. However, he did manage to break off a 16 yard run that set up a Steelers touchdown.
He would finish the game with 19 yards. Bowie State Information Directory Gregory Goings told reporters,
"We're very excited at Bowie State for anybody to make it to the NFL." Last week I had a chance to speak
with Mr. Goings and he told me " He's the prototype running back for the NFL." He also compared his
attributes and playing style to that of St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson. By playing well for the
Steelers when called upon, Issac Redman may have given Bowie State national exposure. Additionally it
could cause NFL scouts to take a closer look at the lower division(s) and /or lesser known schools.

Bowie State @ Chowan University: Keys to Victory
Anthony Vieira
November 5, 2010
(Murfreesboro, NC. Saturday, November 6, 12:00 Noon) Coming off a bye week, the 5-4 Bulldogs will hit the road to face the 3-6 Chowan University Hawks in the regular season finale. This is a huge game for BSU, a game in which it must win in order to have a shot to play in the CIAA Championship Game. With both Virginia State and Bowie leading the Northern Division at 5-1(conference record), this is simply a game of pride for Chowan (3-3 conference record).
Offense: Attack, attack, attack! Chowan is coming off an embarrassing 55-14 loss to Elizabeth City. The week before that game, it was blown out 35-14 by Shaw University. If the Bulldogs want to hand the Hawks a third consecutive loss, it must be able to exploit that defense. The Hawks have given up a dreadful 39.3 points per game, and have allowed opposing rushers 5.8 yards per carry. Through the air, opposing quarterbacks average 7.8 yards per pass attempt. Coach Wilson has to be licking his chops, because there are so many ways to attack this defense. Maybe BSU will spread the ball around and take shots deep down the field. QB Clifton Budd has certainly been outstanding when the ball is in his hands. Maybe the coaching staff is planning to pound the ball with Tariq Jones and Ramono Flowers. Either way may be effective, but I believe the Bulldogs will be most successful with a balanced attack. A healthy mixture of runs and passes will keep the Chowan defense off balance, setting up big plays. The fact that this game is on the road makes it even more important that BSU gets off to a good start. Fortunately, the Hawks have been outscored 96-28 in the 1st quarter this season.
Defense: Although Bowie State and Chowan University average around the same points per game, ( 20.7 and 18.7 respectively) the records of these two teams are significantly different. The stop unit of BSU has been the difference this season. This defense has played extremely well, and have only allowed an average of 16.7 points per game. The Hawks have struggled running the football all season long, averaging just 2.1 yards per carry. This spells trouble for Chowman, because the Bulldogs have been very stout against the run this season ( 2.8 yards per carry). If the Bulldogs can put the clamps on the ground game, the Hawks will have to move the chains aerially. Chowan has had some success when throwing the football this season, but the Bulldog defense will be up to the task. Opposing offenses have only averaged 5.5 yards per pass attempt
against the Bulldogs. But the greatest challenge the defense faces is shutting down WR Robert Holland.
Holland is the Hawks leading receiver with 57 receptions, 731 yards, and 7 touchdowns. The stop unit will certainly need to pay close attention to this WR. If the Bulldogs can stop the run, generate constant pressure on QB Ryan Simpson, and shut down Holland, it will be another strong defensive outing.
Prediction: Bowie State is the better football team, but it cannot afford to underestimate Chowan. Despite the team's 3-6 record, it is 2-1 in home games this season. The lone home loss was a close game (20-13 loss) to Northern Division leader Virginia State. But even with that being said, I really don't think Chowan stands a chance in this matchup. This game means more to the Bulldogs. A win and a Virginia State loss would put BSU in the CIAA Championship Game. The players want to win and Coach Wilson will have the team pumped up. 28-7 Bulldogs

Bulldogs Rally to defeat Panthers 28-27
What a thrilling matchup this was! Going into Saturday's game, it was clear that both teams needed a victory. The atmosphere of the home opener felt as that of a playoff game, the crowd was pumped up and the stadium full. The Bulldogs were able to come away with a hard earned 28-27 victory, a game in which Bowie State overcame a 13 point second half deficit. Junior QB Clifton Budd absolutely torched Virginia Union's secondary, throwing for 355 yards and 3 touchdowns. Budd's performance would go on to set a new BSU passing record for yards and completions (32). WR Douglass Mcneil III was a factor as he caught 7 passes for 144 and 1TD. Defensively, the Bulldogs were outstanding as Virginia Union did not convert a single third down (0-8). Addtionally, Panther's big play receiver Joseph Jean-Pierre was shut down in this contest. (2 catches-26 yards) BSU is now 2-0 in its conference, (2-3 overall) and riding a two game winning streak. Bowie State hosts Virginia State on Saturday, October 2 at 1:00pm.
GAME SUMMARY- On its first possession, the Panthers drove 60 yards in three plays to take an early 7-0 lead. Panthers QB Aris Mcglone English threw a 27yard TD pass to WR Andre Winston. After a three and out, the Bulldogs answered on its second possession, when QB Clifton Budd found WR Douglass Mcneil in the endzone for 25 yards. The Bulldogs settled for field goals on its next two drives, as Kicker Michael Gagne nailed 24 and 30 yarders, which gave the Bulldogs a 13-7 lead. With 5:29 left in the second quarter, senior Sterling Grant Jones sacked Panther's QB Aris Mcglone English for a safety to extend the lead 15-7. However, after a Bulldogs fumble at its own 37 yard line, the Panthers were able to march to the goaline. RB Tarian Donaldson punched it in from 2 yards and the Panthers were down just 15-13 at the half. In the third quarter, Panther's RB Jerrell Washington scored from 1 yard out and now Virginia Union was back on top at 19-15. A second Bowie State fumble was returned for a touchdown by Ja'mir Drakeford. The Panthers led 27-15. But with 2:02 left in the third quarter, Budd threw an 18 yard strike to sophmore Reginald McIntyre to cut the lead to 27-21. With 12:60 remaining in the fourth quarter BSU regained the lead, and never looked back as Budd found senior Gregory Jackson in the endzone for 39 yards.
NOTES: Before the game, Coach Wilson said he wanted to see his team " play four straight quarters." Wilson has to be pleased that his team was able to rally against the Panthers.
* Panthers QB A.Mcglone English was 13/27-177 yards-1TD
*Bulldogs registered 2 sacks, one which resulted in a safety.
* Bulldogs converted a 4th and 15 to score a touchdown in the first quarter.
* Virginia Union and BSU fumbled twice.
* Virginia Union was 0-8 on third downs. (The Crowd was exceptionally loud on third downs, big props to them)
* QB Budd was picked off in the redzone.
* The second quarter featured two near disastrous plays for BSU. (two bad snaps that could have resulted in fumbles.)

Bowie State Bulldogs Aim for 2nd Straight Win
Virginia Union @ Bowie State 1:00pm Saturday September 25, 2010
After a 55-6 rout over Livingstone College, the Bowie State Bulldogs (1-3) return home for a key showdown against the Virginia Union Panthers(1-2). After four consecutive road games to start the season, this game features the Bulldogs in its home opener. The Bowie fans will be pumped up, and the team will look to feed off that emotion. The obvious question here is, can BSU hold on to the momentum of last week's lopsided victory? I definately think so. Improving to 2-3 is this team's focus at the moment. Virginia Union is also coming off its first win, in which it scored 55 points against Lincoln. It should be an intruiging matchup as both teams are coming off wins.
Notes on Virginia Union
The Bad: While studying the Panthers, some alarming statistics stood out to me. In Virginia Union's first 3 games it has given up 47, 57, and 31 points. That averages out to 45 points a game! The offense has lost 7 fumbles on the year, have only scored 3 rushing touchdowns, with a rushing average of 3.3. per carry. This team has not scored in the first quarter so far this year
The Good: The passing game of the Panthers is lethal; 7.0 yards per pass attempt and 15.1 yards per reception. The leading receiver has 20 catches for 363 and 4 touchdowns in just 3 games.
* The key for Bowie is to establish the lead early. The defense of the panthers has not played well thus far this season, so BSU should be able to score often in this contest. Defensively, the bulldogs have played well, only allowing 17 points per game. If Virginia Union's ariel attack is contained Bowie has a greater shot at winning.
